Construction Activities Water Treatment System

Project Profile

  • Project Location : Colorado
  • Client Industry : Railroad
  • Owner Industry : Contractor/ Consultant
  • Gwtt Scope : Rental, O&M
  • Contract Value : $2M
  • Project Duration : 21 Months
  • Contaminants : TSS, iron, VOCs, arsenic

Key Project Details

  • Prior treatment contractor could not meet discharge requirements
  • Provided new treatment system design for permit submittal
  • Upgraded existing treatment system with new equipment and treatment process
  • Reinstalled treatment system; removed system at project close
  • Operated the system with a Colorado licensed operator for all O&M activities

PROJECT CHALLENGES

  • Low-level arsenic reduction system needed to be implemented to meet discharge criteria of 0.6 ppb
  • Existing equipment from prior unsuccessful contractor had to repurposed as part of a new system

Project Narrative

GWTT was hired to analyze, redesign, rebuild, operate, and maintain an existing water treatment system that was not meeting the required discharge criteria. In order to reduce client project cost, GWTT incorporated the existing treatment system equipment into the newly designed system, which addressed the critical contaminants of concern from the influent water: total suspended solids (TSS), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), iron, and, in a later phase of the project, arsenic.

The source water treated was generated through dewatering activities related to the reconstruction of Denver Union Station. Over the life of the project, system influent flow rate ranged from 1,000 GPM up to 1,500 GPM, and the GWTT-operated system treated more than 250 million gallons of water.

Treatment system equipment included: an oxidation system for iron precipitation, pH adjustment, clarifier, coagulation and flocculation, sludge handling system, resin-based arsenic reduction systems, and 4x 3,000 lbs. carbon adsorbers.
