Project Narrative
GWTT was tasked with designing, constructing, and operating a spill containment and treatment system to remediate a site impacted by a train derailment. GWTT was able to provide a system design and have personnel and equipment on site within 12 hours of the client’s request for assistance. All site work, including trenching and piping, extraction well equipment, trailer-based mobile treatment system, and related civil work, was performed by GWTT. All GWTT personnel involved were required to complete FRA training prior to working on the project.
The train derailment resulted in 17,000 gallons of turpentine spilling on the project site. GWTT built a cut-off trench to contain the spill and facilitate contaminant extraction and treatment, and installed approximately 250’ of piping with tie-ins to 25 well vaults. On-site treatment was performed with a mobile remedial multi-phase extraction system, supported by 2 x 2,500-gal portable tanks, 2 x 1,000-lb vapor phase carbon vessels, and a diesel generator sufficient to power the entire system.
GWTT performed all system testing, startup, and commissioning services and subsequently trained client staff in the O&M of the system. After system turnover to client staff, GWTT retained oversight of system O&M and provided support to the client, as needed, through the completion of the project.
