PROJECT CHALLENGES
- Low discharge limits
- Extreme variability of contamination levels across site
- Small footprint for treatment system
- No shutting down the dewatering system because of non-compliant treatment system effluent
Project Narrative
GWTT was contracted to design, supply, operate, and maintain a 450 GPM temporary water treatment system in support of dewatering activities at a highly visible highway-widening project in Virginia Beach, VA. The construction area had previously served several historic gas stations, and some wells had high levels of MTBE as well as other volatiles. In order to preserve the liquid phase carbon over the course of the project, it was determined that the system would utilize a shallow tray air stripper prior to carbon absorption. After design, GWTT mobilized the treatment equipment, including the shallow tray air stripper rated for up to 550 GPM and two, 10,000 lbs. carbon
adsorbers.
GWTT provided the site setup, power distribution, and generator for all electrical equipment. Moreover, GWTT trained the contractor’s day shift operators, state officials, and other site supervisors on the operation of the system prior to startup. At startup, compliance sampling proved the system design successful, and the system was put online full time for approximately four months. GWTT provided trained wastewater operators with local forces for the night and weekend shifts until completion.
